Understanding the brain's ability and capacity to change and grow is one of the fastest growing areas of neuroscience.

Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain to grow and develop new connections. It was long thought that if there was a difficulty in learning to read or write, one should accept and work around these issues. Schools developed accommodations for students believing that the brain could not overcome learning and thinking challenges.

Students with difficulty in reading, spelling, understanding math, following conversations or recalling information struggle in all academic areas. Yet through the work of Barbara Arrowsmith Young and her 19 cognitive exercises, individuals can target areas of weakness in their brains build new and lasting neural connections, making accommodations unnecessary - a thing of the past.

Sheila M. Furey, M.D.

Dr. Furey is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist who has spent her career working with students and adults with learning challenges. She has spent over 20 years investigating learning interventions that create successful outcomes.

Sheila began studying neuroplasticity more than 8 years ago and has been on a mission to bring the Arrowsmith Program those who need it since first reading The Woman Who Changed Her Brain by Barbara Arrowsmith Young. In addition to her knowledge of the assessment and treatment of children and adults with learning challenges, she adds tremendous knowledge and skill in the area of nutritional support. The brain is part of a wonderfully complex system that thrives when given the proper nutrients.

Dr. Furey attended Creighton University School of Medicine. After graduating from medical school, she continued her training at Boston University Hospitals, there completing her Adult Psychiatry and Child Psychiatry Fellowship. She is a Board Certified Psychiatrist and has worked in the Richmond,VA area for 20 years. Sheila works with parents and schools to draft education plans that meet each child’s unique needs. Over the course of her career, she has also gone beyond the use of traditional psychiatric medications and has broadened her therapeutic base with the use of supplements and dietary changes. Dr. Furey is about opening doors and finding new pathways even if they have to be built from the ground up.
