​Careless errors often point to many -largely undiagnosed- learning disorders. Inattention is the most often cited problem, but careless errors can stem from issues as varied as being on the Dyslexic Spectrum, to Auditory Processing Disorder.
 ​

The inability to carry out directions can indicate a difficulty with Auditory Processing. Hearing is the ability to perceive sound, but Auditory Processing is the ability of the brain to interpret the sound that has been heard. Imagine if you missed the verbs in every sentence!

​Many fundamental skills contribute to the ability to be successful in mathematics. Directionality, sequencing, and number sense are just a few-not to mention short term memory. A deficit in just one of these areas can impair mathematical ability. The good news is that each of these areas can be improved through targeted exercise.


​With the widespread use of computers and handheld devices - handwriting has been relegated to a not-so-necessary skill. But in reality it is crucial developmental need.  The motor skills needed to write and those that help us speak fluently are located in the same area of the brain.

​Think about all the skills s student needs to sit in a class and take notes. First they need to hear and PROCESS the words the teacher is saying. Next they have to interpret and select the most important information and supporting elements. Then they have to be able to compose phrases or sentences that -at a later date- will cue the information that is needed for the assessment. Their handwriting, spelling, and grammar must be engaged and executed - and all while the teacher keeps talking! 


​The words Executive Function get thrown around a lot these days. EF is a catch all for the numerous sub-skills necessary to organize our daily lives. But sometimes what seems like and EF issue is simply having to expend the brain power that would be allocated on organization on making up for the difficulties one is having in other areas. When the function of one area of the brain is improved, others skills often improve.
